I'm a dude and I like it

I'm in complete shock. Let me start by saying I'm an insomiac, and dont usually go to bed until 6-7AM. My doctor (female), suggested a few artists to listen to around the evening hours, including Enya. I almost laughed in her face, but figured she knew what she was talking about. After purchasing this, I can't even think about staying wound up. It completely relaxes you, which is what I'm guessing is her mission. Five stars all the way.

May be her BEST since Watermark

Enya has returned with an album that is her strongest and most diverse since WATERMARK. While Enya has retained her 'core' ethereal sound and instrumentation, there are some fairly original works on her latest. Take a listen to "The River Sings" and you will be reminded of early Clannad or Capercaillie--incredible mouth music type textures. Or, take "Long Long Journey," an emotionally triumphant hymn that is layered with epic harmonies that are staggering. "Water Shows the Hidden Heart" has got to be one of her most supernal and glorious songs EVER. "It's in the Rain" and "Someone Said Goodbye" are both fairly unique melodically and show a more "pop" side of Enya. While not straying extremely far from her proven formula (and WHO would want her to anyway?), "Amarantine" still shows some interesting development for this phenomenal artist. So many have tried to copy Enya's sound, but there will only ever be one master of moving, epic, haunting and ethereal female vocals--and that is ENYA!!!

Consistency is the key...

As other artists change their sound to match what is popular, under the guise of "reinventing" themselves, it's nice to see someone keep to their formula. Enya started this sound, so she rightfully owns the formula. It's a good mix of simple chorals and the catchy radio song every now and then. A nice, relaxing album. If you've heard Enya before...and who hasn't...you know EXACTLY what you are getting with this album. In fact, if she just retitled and re-released her old albums, they'd probably still sell. Found a niche, and still fills it better than anyone else.

Genre: New Age

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

With her blend of folk melodies, synthesized backdrops, and classical motifs, Enya created a distinctive style that more closely resembled new age than the folk and Celtic music that provided her initial influences. Enya is from Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, which she left in 1980 to join the Irish band Clannad, the group that already featured her older brothers and sisters. She stayed with Clannad for two years, then left, hooking up with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, with whom...
