Album Review

The third album by Bay Area five-piece 20 Minute Loop is as willfully quirky as their first two, but while it retains the band's signature tendency to spin out into entirely new directions mid-song, the songwriting and the arrangements are overall considerably tighter than before. Singers Kelly Atkins and Greg Giles used to tend to sing at each other more than with, but the intertwining vocal lines on songs like "Parking Lot" are far superior to their earlier efforts; this time, when the harmonies clash (as on the ominously creepy "Our William Tell"), it's clear that they mean for them to. Similarly, an economy of ideas in the arrangements helps the songs sound full and varied rather than wildly overstuffed. The high-concept kicker comes at the end, with a cover of Hüsker Dü's "I'll Never Forget You" done in mock rock-epic style complete with grandiose horn section, but the ten literate, funny, and offhandedly brilliant songs that came before are what you'll come back to.

This albumb is tight!!!!!!! All the songs are catchy and unique!!!!!!! The guitarist in this band is Nils Erikson and he is my guitar teacher. I am 15 yers old and have been playing guitar for almost 7 years. Anyone out there that needs guitar lessons, go to Nils at Bannanas At Large music store in downtown San Rafael, CA

I freakin' LOVE this album...

I saw this band at a "Tribute to Nick Drake" show at the Cafe DuNord in San Francisco. They only played one original, but I liked it so much, I bought the CD then and there. I have been enjoying it immensely ever since. I'm not crazy about the last song, but the rest of the album is fantastic...

Every song is great, except for the last one. Each one is completely unique and has more to it then the boring sugar coated pop most people are used to.

Upon their 1998 formation, 20 Minute Loop have maintained their gender-mixed trademark of uppity hooks and new wave beats to their native of San Francisco. Resulting in their self-proclaimed sound of "freak-pop," the quintet of Kelly Atkins (vocals/keyboards), Greg Giles (guitar/vocals), Joe Ostrowski (guitar), Dan Jones (bass), and Ethan Turner (drums) brought on an added inspiration of X, the Pixies, Pavement, and...
