7 Songs, 28 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

This album is Mastered for iTunes. This session includes live and mostly acoustic versions of six songs from Mat Kearney’s 2011 release Young Love, plus a thoughtful cover of the Rihanna hit “We Found Love.” Fans should be pleased with the selections and how these intimate folk-rock performances capture a feel far from the album's punchy pop. The first three tunes are the most reimagined. Kearney's stripped-down take on “She Got the Honey” includes a full band minus the synths, plus a mellower, melancholy vocal that reveals a different side of the song. “Ships in the Night” is a touching duet with Ingrid Michaelson; Kearney substitutes a soft croon for the original’s rap section. “Down” is repurposed as a sweet, introspective ballad. The next three—particularly “Rochester,” featuring a guitar solo by Brad Paisley—are more similar to their Young Love counterparts, yet they fit well with the set.
