10 Songs, 56 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Seventies rock revivalists Black Mountain have always dabbled with synthesizers, but they’ve never embraced them as much as they do on IV. The grooves are still epic and stony, but for every Sabbath-imbued jam, like the glorious, eight-minute opener, there’s a Pink Floyd-guided suite, like “Defector,” which mixes airy, bluesy vocals, icy keys, and an insistent, trudging bassline. Somehow, though, it’s the tighter tunes that are even more exploratory. On the gothy “Cemetery Breeding,” Stephen McBean and Amber Webber deliver crushingly gorgeous lines like "When you looked in my eyes/I was dreaming of suicide” between Echo & The Bunnymen-style synth-guitar riffs.

Taking you to outer space and back

This is one of best end-to-end albums I have purchased in the last several years. Holy smokes! Where to begin? The delicate lows are jarred loose by soaring guitar riffs from outer space. The vocals and lyrics perfectly blend to take you to that happy place. The tone is perfectly set with layered synthesizers, which are seemingly borrowed from the best of their 80s influences. Black Mountain shovels out a huge diversity of melody and hooks and harmony and bad-assedness across these tracks. Do yourself and your aural senses a favorable and quickly hit the BUY button on this gem...post haste!!!

Amazing band

This band is truly a hidden gem. These guys always turn out killer stuff. Absolutely can't wait for this album. 5 stars based on the two songs I've heard and the goodwill they've garnered from their impressive back catalog. Amber Webber is the best female vocalist on rock as far as I'm concerned.

Love Black Mountain, Looking Forward to their New Work

I am a huge fan of Black Mountain, Pink Mountaintops, Sinoia Caves, Lightning Dust, Grim Tower, etc. the many faces of the members of Black Mountain. But Black Mountain itself is their best and greatest endeavor, fusing the chill spacey vibe of Pink Floyd with the growl and riffage fo Black Sabbath.

I am very much looking forward to this new album.
