iTunes Review

Otis Redding was among the greatest soul singers who ever lived. His short, sweet life has not left many recordings. But each piece of the puzzle only reconfirms his incredible abilities. Redding could lead a crowd to frenzy. Or he could break its heart. These recordings from April 9 and 10, 1966 at Hollywood’s Whisky A Go Go feature three complete sets with his “orchestra,” a horn-driven band that is delightfully rougher than his usual studio-mates, the Bar-Kays or Booker T. & The MGs. A few endearing moments of uncertainly add to the humanity. Yet, overall, this is one well-oiled machine able to shift gears when necessary. No matter the duplications of certain tracks, each version of “Satisfaction” and “Chained and Bound” offers up its own particular moments of joy. To hear Redding sing so heartbreakingly on “Just One More Day” or to stretch the levels of empathy on “These Arms of Mine” is to truly hear one of the greatest voices of any era. His signature tune, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now),” is without peer.

Soul & Burnin

The music is smoking hot on this energetic live album. Otis & the band don't stop for air as they perform relentless three sets of soul music. 29 songs in all make this one heck of a great collection. This is not as polished as Booker T & the MG's playing behind Otis, but Redding's touring band must be given a lot of credit for the sheer energy and will power to put out so much non-stop excitement.

Naturally, Otis Redding is the star here and his shows you why on every track.

The recording quality is top-notch. The sound is so good I find myself closing my eyes to try and imagine what these performances looked like. I don't know many live recordings from the 60's that sound like this. Buy this album!

Genre: R&B/Soul

One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern "deep soul" -- hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. He was also the most consistent exponent of the Stax sound, cutting his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His death at the age of 26 was tragic not just because he seemed on the verge of breaking through to a wide...
