Album Review

Round Midnight is a two-disc box set that compiles all three of the traditional pop albums Linda Ronstadt recorded with Nelson Riddle (What's New, Lush Life, and For Sentimental Reasons). Only dedicated fans will need to own all three of the albums, and, for those listeners, this is a classy way to purchase them.

Round midnight With Nelson Riddle

While Linda Ronstadt may not be the first choice for this material, in general she does a fine job of avoiding the pop-singer clichés of Carly Simon or Rod Stewart. The arrangements set an almost impossibly high bar, as usual. Riddle rules the top shelf of popular arrangers that includes Johnny Mandel, Claus Ogerman, Robert Freeman and Don Costa, and the recorded sound is spectacular. This set is a great bargain, and any young jazz musician or aspiring Musical Director of a vocalist or Broadway show will find most of the musical questions of arranging answered by the great Nelson Riddle, in this as well as his work with Sinatra, Nat Cole and Ella.

A Music Library Essential

'Round Midnight" continues to be one of my all-time favorite vocal/orchestral collaborations. I would put it right up there with Ella Fitzgerald's Greatest Hits and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". "Someone to Watch Over Me", "Skylark", "When You Wish Upon a Star", and "But Not For Me" are beautiful renditions. I wish that "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" was the 7-minute version that Ella Fitzgerald sung. Dan Bray- Orlando, FL

This is such a timeless composition of music, I have enjoyed it for many years and now have my 5 year old listening to it. This is a classic a must for music collections! The songs are classic and the vocals are outstanding Linda did a great job!

With roots in the Los Angeles country and folk-rock scenes, Linda Ronstadt became one of the most popular interpretive singers of the '70s, earning a string of platinum-selling albums and Top 40 singles. Throughout the '70s, her laid-back pop never lost sight of her folky roots, yet as she moved into the '80s, she began to change her sound with the times, adding new wave influences. After a brief flirtation with pre-rock pop, Ronstadt settled into a pattern of adult contemporary pop and Latin albums,...
