The Best Is Yet to Come - The Songs of Cy Coleman

Cy Coleman was the youngest of the Great American Songbook composers (Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin) and his timeless songs are given current life with contemporary female artists bringing their own interpretive vocal skills to this modern tribute. All tracks were arranged by pianist-producer Dave Palmer who brings a late-night jazz club feel throughout. Fiona Apple breaks five years of silence with her interpretations of “Why Try To Change Me Now” and “I Walk A Little Faster.” Patty Griffin delivers a restrained rendition of “The Best Is Yet to Come,” a tune that won Ella Fitzgerald a GRAMMY for her performance. The list of performers is in accordance with Coleman’s award-winning status. Madeleine Peyroux may seem a natural but adding the quirky Jill Sobule, Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins, and longtime Leonard Cohen backing singer Perla Batalla allows these women to take the vocal spotlight as well. Coleman’s songs represent the finest of a bygone era. Obvious tunes such as “Witchcraft” and “Big Spender” are bypassed for deeper catalog numbers such as “Hey Look Me Over,” “Where Am I Going?” and “Too Many Tomorrows.”
