Impressive

Jarrett honors the landmark work that laid the foundation for modern keyboard music. Jarrett is such a remarkable player that it's a marvel how he disappears into Bach's masterpiece. Jarrett's respect for Bach is obvious, and Jarrett brings all his talent and technique into the service of revealing the work, with not even a hint of the performer's ego getting in the way. This performance is on the Tureck side of the Tureck-Gould spectrum. Jarrett's is like a more aggressive Tureck, coming at the works at a speedier clip, but sharing the minimal performer-introduced coloring and tempo changes. Somehow, this recording is at once very modern and Baroque. There are a few clunkers in some of the really busy contrapuntal segments, but nothing that detracts from the overall magnificence.

Wonderful

There is nothing Keith Jarrett does in this recording that pronounces his skill as his pianist. At least, not directly. But Jarrett does what any good pianist does: He does not play with the intent of leaving the audience impressed by the pianist, but with the intent of impressing upon us the power of Bach's work. In this sense, Keith Jarrett is one of the best living American pianists - he lets go of all pretense, and simply plays what should be played. His fugues are not brimming with ornaments and uninvited trills, like Anthony Newman, or exaggerated to almost unbearable proportions, as done by Glenn Gould and countless others. If you are looking for Keith Jarrett, find the Koln Concert, or the Carnegie Hall Concert. If you are looking for Keith Jarrett, look elsewhere, because there is none to be found here. As far as I am concerned, Jarrett is, in this album, concerned solely with channeling Bach; not with promoting himself. Suffice to say that this album is a work of love in every respect. It is beautifully played without embellishment or excess, and I think that were Bach alive when the piano came about, this is how he would have wished to here his pieces played. Fork up $40 and get this and book 2. It's certainly worth the money. As far as harpsichord recordings, most harpsichord players are somewhat less pretentious than pianists, so most are relatively good. Just avoid Anthony Newman.

Pianist, composer, and bandleader Keith Jarrett is one of the most prolific, innovative, and iconoclastic musicians to emerge from the late 20th century. As a pianist (though that is by no means the only instrument he plays), he literally changed the conversation in jazz by introducing an entirely new aesthetic regarding solo improvisation in concert. Though capable of playing in a wide variety of styles, Jarrett is deeply grounded in the jazz tradition. He has recorded over 80 albums as a leader...
