Album Review

"I like your albums, but they just don't compare to your live show." This is what Eddie from Ohio's audiences have been telling them for years, they admit, and it's not hard to understand why by listening to this double live album. The group's music, propelled by percussionist Eddie Hartness, proves energetic and kinetic onstage in a way it doesn't without an audience cheering along. Songs that seem slight in terms of musical and lyrical content turn out to be crowd pleasers. Mildly amusing novelties become laugh-out-loud funny. And by mixing in covers of everything from Lyle Lovett's "If I Had a Boat" to the Grateful Dead warhorse "I Know You Rider"/"Turn On Your Lovelight," the group makes use of material that is more clever and rocking than their own. Michael Clem's novelty songs (including three new ones: "Jack Can't Cook," "Not Enough Gold in the World," and "Smoke") come off better onstage than Robbie Schaefer's more earnest ones. But if Hartness is the secret weapon, the best all-around performer is the much-improved (and recently married) singer, Julie Murphy Wells, who often betters her studio versions of the songs. A group like this makes its money on the road, not on records, and Portable EFO Show will be a terrific enticement to listeners to go out and see them in person.

Great Live Album

I've been a fan for years, and I can tell ya, nothing from EFO's tudio albums compare to seeing them live. They energizing, enigmatic and downright funny! This album does a good job of capturing all that!

Real Talent

What a great recording of these guys. Ive seen a few shows around the Baltimore area and these guys, (and Julie) COOK! Its a crisp, rich, and full bodied recording of rythems, (thanks Edie) harmony and strings that seperates folk from the main stream.

*If I HaD a BoAt!

You jus gotta luv Lyle Lovitt's "If I had A Boat." EFO's version is (no offense Lyle) soooo much more upbeat and fun!! It is a must have for ALL music collections :)

Biography

Formed: 1991 in Virginia

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '90s, '00s

This folk-rock quartet from the Washington, D.C./suburban Virginia area was only formed in 1991, but they've quickly become favorites on the folk festival circuit with their jazzy, rootsy blend of folk-rock. The group's popularity grew with the growth of Triple A (adult album alternative) radio stations in the 1990s, and their crossover appeal prevented them from being labeled purely a folk act. Composed of Julie Murphy (vocals), Robbie Schaefer (guitar and vocals), Eddie Hartness (percussion and...
