Editors’ Notes

This is a massive undertaking where John Mellencamp (Cougar no more) restructures his recording career, from 1976 to 2009 as the title states, and turns it into one big sprawling American myth. The man who captured a certain breathless Middle America in “Jack & Diane” now recreates the path that has led him to his own personal version of his take on roots music. His own grandmother can be heard singing on “Grandma’s Theme.” Professor, author and civil rights activist Cornell West reads Mellencamp’s “Jim Crow.” An alternate take of “Rain On the Scarecrow” gives the tune a juke- joint life; an alternate take of “Deep Blue Heart” features Trisha Yearwood and commands a different perspective. An acoustic demo of “Jenny At 16” shows the roots for the acoustic demo of “Jack & Diane” before the “hit” version closes out the “first disc.” Joanne Woodward reads “The Real Life.” Demos of “Authority Song” and “Our Country” sit alongside demos for “Peaceful World” and a darker version of “Rural Route.” Longtime fans will be astounded by Mellencamp’s catalog depth. Casual listeners will discover a whole new Mellencamp.

Customer Reviews

They've Lowered The Bar On This Collection...

Cannot believe some of the 'Reviews' posted here. Prime example: They give it a 5 star rating and then follow up with a "Can't wait to listen to all of the previously unreleased tracks, demo versions and more" comment. In essence, they're admitting they haven't even listened to the collection, but feel qualified to judge the merit of it's content. Not only that... Then along come others who claim they found this 'Review' helpful. Unbelievable!

Straight up and honest - One will find the material here a bit lacking for the price being asked. It's somewhat over-rated in the reviews posted here, but then again, they hadn't actually listened to it. Here's another clue to it's content... There's 'Demo' material scattered amongst the meatier cuts. In other words, stuff that the artist previously did not wish to release. Why? Because it was below standards then, just as it is below standard now. Only the artist and record label want to milk every cent they can. Listen, as a former John Cougar Mellencamp fan, I appreciate his contribution to the music industry and some of his material is flatout great. But this collection is nothing new except for the fact it's stuff that previously wouldn't hold water and they've lowered the bar to separate you from your hard earned dollars. Just gimmicks, that's all. Keep your money. There are better sources available for honest to goodness Mellencamp material.

Amazing career retrospective

This is an amazing collection of Mellencamp's hits as well as some of his best songs that were originally overlooked. Can't wait to listen to all of the previously unreleased tracks, demo versions, and more. The iTunes album download even comes with the complete 72 page booklet with the liner notes. I will probably go and buy the hard bound book as well to have as a collector's item and to look at large versions of all the pictures. Thanks John for delivering a great product again. What a great price for all this material!

Good Cougar Stuff

Classic Mellonhead. Between a Laugh & a Tear has allways been a favorite. Dinged him a star for re-issues and a another star for his bs politics. Shut up and just sing John John.

Throughout his career, John Mellencamp has had to fight, whether it was for the right to record under his own name or for respect as an artist. Of course, he never made it easy on himself. Mellencamp began his career in the late '70s as a Bruce Springsteen clone called Johnny Cougar. As his career progressed, his music became more distinctive, developing into a Stonesy blend of hard rock and folk-rock. His musical development coincided with his growth in popularity — by the time "Hurts So Good"...
