Album Review

The Pistoleros' debut album Hang on to Nothing is an intoxicating blend of roots-rock, country and Mexican music. In some ways, the group is like an Americana version of Los Lobos, but the Pistoleros have a stronger classic rock and power-pop bent, which makes their music muscular and powerful. They're also talented songwriters who have excellent taste in collaborators. Gary Louris and Marc Perlamn of the Jayhawks co-wrote "Hang on to Nothing" and "Wasting My Time," while the Smithereens' Pat DiNizio co-wrote "Somehow Someway," "Nothing Lasts Forever" and "The Game." The first single, "Hang on to Nothing," is a Douglas Hopkins composition, and like "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You," the two hits he wrote for the Gin Blossoms, it kicks with a rootsy spirit and irresistible melody, and it's just the icing on this excellent debut.

The Pistoleros! Awesome!

The Pistoleros are an awesome Arizona band, just like the Gin Blossoms. Glad to see they are on iTunes.

Takes Me Back

Great Music! Original Arizona Sound. Now if only I can find the one and only album by the Chimeras.......The Zubia Brothers with Doug Hopkins on the guitar post Gin Blossoms!

Thank God They're on iTunes!

I used to be a DJ in Mobile, Alabama on 92Zew. We started playing a couple tracks from this album when I was in high school and I fell in love with the Pistoleros! Then I went to college and lost the CD. I have been looking to replace it for over ten years! This just made my day!

The sons of a mariachi musican, the Zubias first emerged as members of the Chimeras, which also included the ill-fated future Gin Blossoms guitarist Douglas Hopkins; "My Guardian Angel," originally written by Hopkins, later surfaced on the Pistoleros' 1997 debut Hang on...
