Editors’ Notes

Newcomers to Ruby Fray (a.k.a. Emily Beanblossom) might hardly imagine the ruckus Beanblossom kicked up with other Olympia, Wash., bands in the past (such as the noisy Christmas and freak-folkers Turf Surgery). On her debut as Ruby Fray, Beanblossom takes on the personae of earthy blues mama (“What’s All This Talk”), a ghostly, sultry chanteuse à la Mazzy Star (“Northern Washington,” “Closed Eye”), and purveyor of desolate Americana goth (“Let’s Grow Older,” “Barren Hill”). She partners with K Records founder/Olympia scene godfather Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System) on the charming “Mint Ice Cream.” Though when we listen to the murky “Wilt Worker” or the muted clatter of “And the Moon,” imagining Nick Cave along for the ride is more fitting. If you’re old enough to remember the thrill delivered by Cowboy Junkies’ The Trinity Session album back in 1988, we point you to it as a reference. Pith offers the same haunting and beautiful vibe, the same mesmerizing effect, and the same feeling that one's discovering something quite wonderful.

What I've been waiting for

When I first heard Emily Beanblossom singing in the band Christmas, my first thought was: I'd love to hear a solo album of her. Well, here it is and it's exactly as I hoped it would be. Though technically not a solo album, Beanblossom's vocals are featured prominently and beautifully. The soundscape ranges from Stevie Nicks, to Carol King, and Shana Cleveland (The Curious Mystery). The album includes a whose who of Northwest musicians featuring Calvin Johnson, Angelo Spencer, and Arrington de Dionyso. It's a truly stunning freshman effort and it goes perfect for any occasion.

Olympia, Washington singer and songcrafter Emily Beanblossom took on the name Ruby Fray in 2011 as a moniker for her solo work apart from her other collaborative endeavors. Beanblossom was active in the Olympia scene in bands like Turf Surgery, Legs the Crab, Karczol, and others, but was best known as the frontwoman for the raucous noise rock band Christmas. Following an extensive U.S. tour with Christmas, the singer retreated for a time to her family farm and began work on the darker, more organic...
