PERFECTION! Jeannie C. Riley at her finest!
JEANNIE C. RILEY - "JEANNIE" her last studio album Plantation Records. And what an album it is... PERFECTION! When this album came out it was such a refreshing sound from Jeannie... well ahead of it's time... An acoustical journey through wonderful material, flawless vocals, outstanding production and perfect musicians. The most "Jeannie C" of any album before or for years to come. Jeannie C. Riley gave her finest performances on this album. A sound that was truly the real Jeannie C. Riley... the first single "Oh, Singer" a #1 Country hit, and her third biggest Pop hit, nothing pop about it that is how good this song is. A nostalgic song about bygone days of cotton fields, coal fired trains, riverboats on the Mississippi..and what a song it is one of Jeannie's personal favorites. It is simply wonderful, and as wonderful as this song is, at Jeannie's live concerts it was a show stopper... I don't believe there could have been a better recording of it... but to have the magic of the live performance come across on the record would have been out of this world... if you never seen her do it live, you've missed a truly outstanding moving performance. The next single "Good Enough To Be Your Wife" earned Jeannie C. yet another Grammy award nomination. Hitting the top of the Country charts and again crossing over to the Pop charts, it's an up tempo song still very acoustical but with a dominate piano... if I recall correctly the only cut on the album with a dominate piano but still fitting into this album perfectly. Single three was "Roses And Thorns"... this song is AWESOME! it screamed single material... and Shelby released it as one. It has an Acoustic driving guitar feel coupled with Riley's flawless vocal performance...you can't help but listen in amazement at this song, and then want to listen to it again and again... simply BEAUTIFUL PERFECTION! As we have said this album had an acoustical sound years before it's time... A sound we could only wish Jeannie could have stuck with. By the time "Roses And Thorns" was done with it's chart run, Jeannie had moved to MGM Records, and single releases were starting there... so after she had been charting with MGM, Shelby released a non album cut (The Lions Club)then after that he pulled a fourth single from this album "If You Could Read My Mind" another outstanding flawless performance... so much better than Gordon Lightfoot's version... yeah he wrote it... but this is simply the best version of this song you will ever hear! This album is with out a doubt one of the finest albums in country music history... it is perfection. These songs could be released as new today and you would think they were just recorded new... that is how good the sound of this album is. So many great songs.... there is not a low point on this album... "Children" "Light Your Light And Let It Shine" are more of the perfect songs showcasing this album...the gospel feel of "Will The Real Jesus Please Stand Up" and "Tell The Truth And Shame The Devil" with backing vocals by the Nashville edition... (Note: the Low Bass backup vocal... a sound Olivia Newton-John would use in her hits "Let Me Be There" And "If You Love Me Let Me Know... yep.... same man only done here first...it's true!). "I've Done A lot Of living Since Then" Her cover of Brewer & Shepleys "One Toke Over The Line" perfect additions to this album. and the best version of "Help Me Make It Through The Night" that you will find anywhere. Out of five stars the album gets ten... yes... it IS that good. The beautiful photo of Jeannie on the cover captures who the real Jeannie C. Riley is, and captures the feel of this album... I remember the first time I saw this album on display in a store... how it stood out from all others.... Congrats to Shelby S. Singleton... for giving us this album... and for doing everything just right!... Jeannie deserved this album... her fans deserved this album... and the music world deserved this album. It is quite possibly the most underrated album in music history. Even still earning a Grammy nomination... If you love music... get this album... you will LOVE it... PERFECTION!!!!!! (On a side note if things would have really been on the up and up at Plantation Records, this album would have easily been certified Gold record status.) For this I-Tunes re-issue an extras cut is added "The Tree Of Joy" recorded sometime earlier than this album, it does not fit the feel and sound of this album, but a neat bonus anyway.
I sat down this afternoon to come up with a review for this wonderful record that I can not pull of my turntable and I have to say, the "JEANNIECandME" review already said it perfectly. What a great sound they had. You don't want the music to stop. If this record was released today by a major artist it would be a hit. A true lost treasure!
