Album Review

Rock N Roll Will Never Die was the first Wesley Willis album that was funded by a label, but the cleaner sound really makes no difference at all. At their core, every song Wesley Willis sings is the same song, with the same melody, the same chords and the same skeletal lyrics — the only difference is that sometimes he sings about "Kurt Cobain," sometimes about "Pink Floyd," sometimes about "Blackie-O," sometimes about "Liz Phair," sometimes about "Bolt Thrower," of all people. It's certainly admirable that Willis has decided to not be tied down by his schizophrenia, but it often seems that his audience is laughing at him, not with him. Despite that nagging suspicion, which tends to cloud any critical judgment of Willis and his records, Rock N Roll Will Never Die is one of his better records, simply because of its clean but not slick production and fresh performances. Of course, Willis is above criticism — it's hard to criticize something that is essentially variations on one simple theme, let alone a batch of songs written by a schizophrenic — but that still doesn't make listening to any of his records any easier.

Where's the love?

Come on, people. This is Wesley Willis. You have to appreciate the music as the outlet that it was for a very troubled man. Wesley felt the only way he could stop the schizophrenic "demons" in his head was to make music. It may be simple but it was one man's way of communicating with others despite his handicaps, give him some love.

Yes!

THIS is the best album ever. Better than anything by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, or Barry Manilow. Ok, just kidding, that's a bit of a stretch...

But Wesley Willis was a very funny man, and he knew exactly what he was doing with his music despite his schizophrenia. This album is hilarious, as well as his other albums, and I would seriously take this ANY DAY over crap like Lil Wayne.

I dont get it...

This "music" makes the veins in my head want to punch ever blood cell that runs through because is now dead to them all because of this cd.

Wesley Willis was a schizophrenic street singer who built up a small cult following with his bizarre, three-chord rants about trivial everyday items, music, and people he knew. For the first part of the decade, several independently released tapes of his songs appeared, eventually followed by indie recordings of his albums.
