iTunes Review

Distilling a more than four decade career down to 34 tracks would be difficult under any circumstance. When it’s someone as creatively diverse as Ry Cooder, who has served as a key sessionman, a songwriter, and a movie soundtrack artist, it’s all but impossible to completely capture every worthy piece; however, this collection assembled by Cooder’s musical foil and son, Joachim Cooder, does an admirable job at bringing the many disparate ends into rhyme and rhythm. Joachim discards the notion of chronology and assembles the pieces like a newly constructed puzzle, telling the Ry Cooder story as a balance between his better-known pieces and the quizzical obscurities that collectors will enjoy, all flowing together as if this were a brand new album from an accomplished artist. From Cooder’s self-titled 1970 debut through 2008’s I, Flathead, with plenty of stop-offs in between to pick up tracks from the soundtracks to Paris, Texas, Southern Comfort, Alamo Bay, Crossroads and Johnny Handsome, The UFO Has Landed captures this stellar slide guitarist and his likable if limited vocal skills (he’s a rural bluesman at heart) in a prime setting.

Great

Great.

Getting Reacquainted Has Never Been Sweeter

The last time I listened to Ry Cooder was in the 80's. He slipped off my radar... But after a couple of decades of becoming exposed to much new music especially the Austin sound, Cooder's music is new and vibrant to me all over again in "UFO". Bright, blues-y, engaging, steady, comforting. His slide guitar is going to be a great friend on the upcoming cold winter nights. I can't stop listening to it. It's a fine and well done collection!

great tunes- lots of songs for the price

Ry has been around for so long and if he could sing a smattering better he would be Johnny Winter or the like. There isn't a white boy playing all these styles that is as complex as Ry, now don't take offense, Ry has been in the business with Taj Mahal since way back and you know who Taj is - so cut me some slack, Lowell died, Johnny is still great, Ry is the real deal- for this many songs you can't go wrong, I only wished everyone knew what an influential player he really is! Whether serving as a session musician, solo artist, or soundtrack composer, Ry Cooder's chameleon-like fretted instrument virtuosity, songwriting, and choices of material encompass an incredibly eclectic range of North American musical styles, including rock & roll, blues, reggae, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, Dixieland jazz, country, folk, R&B, gospel, and vaudeville. The 16-year-old Cooder began his career in 1963 in a blues band with Jackie DeShannon and then formed the short-lived Rising Sons in...
