Something isn't right.
Don't get me wrong, the cd is still completely worth purchasing. However, be forewarned that it will take a few minutes to adjust to the odd accents and vocal tendencies of some of the performers. I found Serkan Kaya particularly grating. It wasn't that his performance was horrible, he just had very odd phrasing. That said, Drew Sarich as Jesus is terrific. It's worth buying the album simply for him. If only he could have sung Judas and Jesus, it'd be perfect.
...and I can't stand Andrew Lloyd Webber
I don't know what some of these other reviewers are talking about. Listen, I hate ALW, have never really liked this "opera" in general, and I've always considered his Weber/Rice productions to be lyrically insipid. BUT, this production is really phenomenal. It sounds completely fresh and the fact that they used several pop or rock-style vocals where in the past they've used traditional classical styles makes the entire score come across as an entirely new piece of music. Even the overly simple lyrics don't annoy me with this recording. Drew Sarich, in particular, stands out with an incredible vocal style that adds a new dimension to his character and a range that must be heard to be believed. His commitment to the music is total and the raw emotion in his voice sends chills at times. I'd never heard of him before this album, but believe me, I'll be keeping my eyes open for him now. Sure there are some accents on the recording that you may not be used to hearing, but so what? It just adds to the universality of the music. It's hard to imagine that an accent would be enough to discourage someone from performances this great. Get past it and just enjoy some extraordinary talent.
An interesting interpretaition.
I love the music, it tells a story (how ever opinionated) very well. The actual music is very addicting and original. It show some interesting view points on Jesus. I think all the voices are very talented and appropriate for the role. Over all, an magnificent piece.
