Headphone Commute Review

It seems that Jeff McIlwain reserves the "ICL" suffix in his moniker for his more minimal and ambient works released on Hymen [whereas the two Lusine albums appearing on Ghostly International are more beat oriented]. Born in Texas and now residing in Seattle, McIlwain builds his expertise on studies of 20th century electronic music and sound design for music and film at the California Institute of the Arts. Incorporating field recordings, superb depth reverberation, and deep bass thumps in just the right places, Language Barrier explores the entire frequency spectrum and fully elevates you into an audiophile's heaven (Grados required for full access). McIlwain masters the art of beatless rhythms and sonic engineering, creating vast soundscapes that spread over your cochlea like dew over waking hills. Reserved for very special occasions, this delicacy should be consumed slowly, enjoying every measured and very treasured sip.

Wow, I couldn't hit the BUY ALBUM button fast enough! Where is everybody?!? This record has been out since early summer and no reviews?!? I have been very impressed by his work on Ghostly, but this record is some of the prettiest blur of sounds that I have heard since Chihei Hatakayama and Christopher Bissonnette. BUY THE WHOLE RECORD! I can't stress how pretty this is. Just listen to all of the samples and see if you're convince. If not, you probably don't understand this genre very well so go back to your nickelback CD.

This is a nearly perfect album. Gentle in tone and light on beats, yet rich on musicality and vision. It is rare that music can be so emotionally and atmospherically deep yet easy to listen to. I turned to Lusine's albums after hearing his live performances, which caught me by surprise. He displays a professionalism in his compositions and execution not often seen in the electronic culture and almost never in pop culture. Beautiful stuff. Highly recommended.
