iTunes Review

Once the chirpy lead singer of the 80s powerpop group the Go-Go’s and then a successful solo singer (“Heaven Is A Place on Earth”), Carlisle has been silent for nearly a decade. Her return is welcomed if unexpected, as she reinvents herself on Voila as a singer of French pop standards. However, while her material covers a wide range and hits upon the important archetypes from Edith Piaf to Serge Gainsbourg to Francoise Hardy, she is hardly beholden to traditional arrangements. Her backing group includes Brian Eno on keyboards and the Hot House Flowers’ Fianchna O’Braonain on guitar and the arrangements are exploratory in their approach, applying elements of electronica, ambient, middle-eastern groove, alternative rock and everything in between. The eclectic and expansive settings leave plenty of room for Carlisle to explore her own vocal experiments. She sounds perfectly comfortable singing entirely in French, her rich tone coming through strongly on “Avec Le Temps,” Jacques Brel’s “Ne Me Quitte Pas,” Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose” and Charles Aznavour’s “Jezebel.”

For her first album in 10 years, Belinda gives us quite a treasure. I have been reading about this project for a while now and was getting skeptical about whether or not it would ever come to fruition. Thankfully for all of us, it has. Though I have all of her albums, solo and with the Go-Go's, in my opinion she has never better. The husky quality of her voice provides a definite allure and sexiness missing in today's world of in your face crassness. Bonnie at Clyde and Contact are two standout tracks that exhibit this quality. Hopefully this album will find a the larger audience it deserves and inspire you to create more music and us to explore more beyond the "art" being forced upon us on a daily basis. Welcome back Belinda. You have been greatly missed.

Great Job Belinda!

This album is fantastic, probably her best ever. My favorites are La Vie en Rose, Contact, Jezebel, and Bonnie et Clyde.

Out of left field and into the left bank

Mais Belinda! Ou est l'amour pour America, baby? You have to hand it to her for mixing it up on this solo record. No "Circle in the Sand" pop gems here, instead Ms. Carlisle reinterprets classic French torch songs and throws a few fun curveballs (She sounds like she was born to sing "Contact"). It's a confident, fun group of songs. Her trembling vibrato has rarely sounded better. Zut alors!

Belinda Carlisle pursued a solo career after leaving the Go-Go's in 1984. As her solo career progressed, Carlisle removed any of the rough edges remaining in her style, transforming from a new wave rocker to a polished adult contemporary pop singer. The change was evident on her first album, 1986's Belinda. Featuring the number three hit single "Mad About You," the record went gold and established her as a viable hitmaker. The following year, Carlisle released Heaven on Earth, her greatest solo success....
