Martha was Motown’s Church Sanger

Antes de La Supremes, there were The Marvelettes as the first top Motown female group beginning with the pop-ish “Please Mr. Postman”, even influencing The Beatles. But then came the churchy-street chanteuse, which she actually disapproved of being labeled despite her “Dancing in the Street”, arguably the first ubiquitous Motown anthem tied with Barrett Strong’s “Money”.

I was simply “Swept Away” with Martha’s “Nowhere to Run”, still finding its way on current soundtracks. The aforementioned “Dancing in the Street” ranks as one of the most identifiable songs of its generation. “Heatwave” descriptive as the long hot summer and also a cultural metaphor for the riots of ‘65-‘67.

However, nothing, and I mean, not a single smash Martha sang can eclipse her solo performance on the elegant, slightly underrated “My Baby Loves Me” (because it should have been a #1 Pop and R&B and even Adult Contemporary smash!....Top 10 was just not indicative of its quality....Grammy worthy as well) penned and produced by William Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson was a second string staff writer and producer, which underscores how Motown’s First Stringer Writer/Producer’s were the absolute best in the business.

Once The Supremes began their reign as Supreme, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas remain vital for a couple of more years with “Honey Chile” and “Love Bug (Leave My Heart Alone)”. But once Diana became the undisputed Queen of Motown, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes both began falling back as The Supremes became and remains the all-time #1 Female Group...even as En Vogue, The Dixie Chicks, Destiny’s Child all come and go as formidable competitors.

Martha Reeves and The Vandellas have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
