Album Review

Legacy's 2012 release The Classic Christmas Album rounds up 16 selections from the various holiday albums Barry Manilow recorded for Arista over the years. There were three sets — 1990's Because It's Christmas, 2002's A Christmas Gift of Love, 2007's In the Swing of Christmas — and this samples all three fairly evenly. There may be some shifts in mood but it's subtle, and the entirety of this collection delivers the kind of smooth, swinging cheer fans expect from Manilow.

What A Fabulous Collection

For over 37 years I have listened to everything that Barry Manilow has put out, played on stage and on tv and movies and in Vegas. This is nothing less than everything he does. His ballad of Tonight belongs to all the children should be an anthem to Christmas. His version gives me chills and makes me teary eyed every time he sings it. Never stop singing. you are truly e best singer I have ever ever had the pleasure of hearing and seeing. may Barry live on forever. love this album a lot.
Thanks for ALL the memories it brings to me.

Great Collection, Uneven Mastering

I'm a stickler for balanced mastering and this cd just doesn't have it. Okay Barry's first cd "Because It's Christmas" was released in sonic enhancement infancy (1990) and the tracks lifted from that album to this one, marked improvement as are the tracks lifted from "A Gift Of Love." The "In The Swing Of Christmas" tracks and the single "Christmas Is Just Around The Corner" later to be included on the commercial release as well as the bonus "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer" of "In The Swing Of Christmas," a Hallmark Cards exclusive it's first year, sounds muted. This album along with three other artists, John Denver, Luther Vandross, and Willie Nelson, were given this Legacy "Classic Christmas" treatment because of the success of the Tony Bennett album. While the mastering varies, this series brings together the finest holiday recordings of these amazing artists and I personally hope this treatment expands.

A Christmas CD that I actually enjoy listening to!

I'm not a big Christmas album listener, but the variety of music styles in this Manilow collection has won me over. Sure its got a few standards - like "Silver Bells" and "Silent Night" , but it's the jazzed up songs with a fresh twist to them that got my attention. Who thought one would tap their toes to "JIngle Bells' and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"? I did. And the song "Christmas is Just Around the Corner" should be getting major radio play. This one will put a smile on your face as you listen to it. And what Manilow collection would not include some powerful, beautiful ballads? I must say the inclusion of "A Gift of Love" is a gift to myself when listening to it. So beautiful. BRAVO Barry Manilow and Merry Christmas to you.

In terms of record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers ever. That success hasn't necessarily translated to respect (or even ironic hipster appreciation) in most quarters; instead, Manilow's music has been much maligned by critics and listeners alike, particularly the romantic ballads that defined his career, which were derided as maudlin schlock even during his heyday. It's true that Manilow's taste for swelling choruses and lush arrangements...
