Editors’ Notes

Covering the decade that Joe Jackson spent on A&M Records, this collection charts the British rocker's evolution, highlighting not only his hits but his artistic high points (not that the two are mutually exclusive). We go from J.J.'s late-'70s angry-young-man new wave phase ("Is She Really Going Out with Him?," "I'm the Man") to his brief, prescient dabbling in swing/jump blues ("Jumpin' Jive") years ahead of the swing revival. From there, it's on to the cosmopolitan, keyboard-driven pop of "Steppin' Out," the jazzy R&B of "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)," the raw rock retrenchment of "Right and Wrong," and the '60s mod homage "Down to London."

Customer Reviews

I always like Joe Jackson

But never got around to purchasing his album before. I had forgetten just how many of his songs I did enjoy which made this purchase a true bargain. Highly recommended for the other early 80s adults.

Gotta love Joe Jackson

His "Be My Number Two" got a "best of set" award from my local radio station the other day. I hadn't heard it for a long time, so I decided to buy the song here. Little did I know that for $5.99 I could get his greatest hits in their entirety. Perfect!

GREAT

I had some of Joe Jackson's music on LP- so I was in a great need to update my library with his greatest hits CD. Of course, if you like a great versatile, singer/songwriter/pianist, etc. with a jazzy, pop and punk influences- HE's THE MAN! (lol). A great deal as well!

In his 1999 memoir, A Cure for Gravity: A Musical Pilgrimage, Joe Jackson writes approvingly of George Gershwin as a musician who kept one foot in the popular and one in the classical realms of music. Like Gershwin, Jackson possesses a restless musical imagination that has found him straddling musical genres unapologetically, disinclined to pick one style and stick to it. The word "chameleon" often crops up in descriptions of him, but Jackson prefers to be thought of as "eclectic." Is he the Joe...
