Reseña de álbum

Stereo Total's 1999 album My Melody continues the group's tradition of international pop postmodernism and clever covers, including two Serge Gainsbourg numbers — the appropriately go-go-flavored "Vilaines Filles, Mauvais Garçons" and "In/Out" — and a Casio-colored version of Pizzicato Five's "Tokyo Mon Amour." "Ringo I Love You" by Bonni Jo Mason (aka Cher) and the Beatles' "Drive My Car" (known here as "Tu Peux Conduire Ma Bagnole") also get the Stereo Total treatment, giving My Melody's sound a mid-'60s foundation. Though their covers are entertaining, Stereo Total's original songs complete their sound, blending together so many pop music elements that they also resemble covers or forgotten B-sides. "Beautycase," which lists the contents of a cosmetics case, has the new wave stomp of a forgotten Nena track, while "Larmes Toxique" and "Tout le Monde Se Fout des Fleurs" capture the delicate drama of French pop divas like Françoise Hardy. With its immediate, lo-fi sound and enthusiastic performances, My Melody is a charming, sprawling journey through Stereo Total's diverse pop world. [Kill Rock Stars reissued My Melody in 2006.]

think of it as an investment

i have to say that when i first heard this album i was a little put off, but the more and more i listen to it, the more and more i love it. the multi-level insanity and off-key singing is unexpected perfection, and i notice new things about songs every time i listen to them. i'd compare it to my experience with both m.i.a. and guv'ner: you almost want to move on to something else during the first listen, but you get drawn back in and soon you can't get out... trust me.

it gets me everytime

Though they're based in Berlin, the witty pop group Stereo Total draw bandmembers and musical influences from across Europe. Vocalist/guitarist/drummer Françoise Cactus is French and vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Brezel Göring is German, and the group has included members from Italy, Scotland, and Bohemia. Their 1995 debut album, Oh Ah! on Bungalow Records, introduced their kitchen-sink approach to pop music, which embraces punk, hip-hop, disco, '60s pop, and rock from France, the U.K., and the...
