iTunes Review

Commissioned by the Seattle Symphony, the debut recording of John Luther Adams' lush, richly orchestrated Become Ocean was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2014. Inspired by a poem written by John Cage for Lou Harrison, the work is designed to envelop the listener in waves of sound. With Ludovic Morlot at the helm, the Seattle Symphony deliver a powerful performance of Adams’ elegant score, which swells from near-silent serenity to raging tempest.

I was really waiting to be blown away

If you like the first three minutes you will stick around for the next 39.

More or less it just seems like a drone piece for orchestra. I know I know, he built the whole thing with the number 7, etc, etc. So therefore "it has structure," but it just seems like I've heard a million drone pieces before. Maybe it's the first big one to be taken seriously by an orchestra. And Maybe the Pulitzer committee liked the environmental message. Either way, it doesn't hit me as the great "apocalyptic piece of our time." It hits me as 'almost random moodiness for 42 minutes.' If it had been called 'Wave Machine" I wonder if it would have won a prize.

Adams: Become Ocean

Stunning. With a piece this length (45 min-ish) you can use this for yoga or meditation (that is what I do!). Let your mind wander and imagination run free as you listen to this beautiful creation.

An Important Piece

Think of this as the next Harmonielehre, except this time it *did* win the Pulitzer. A fantastic accomplishment.
