iTunes Editors’ Notes

Jerome "Doc" Pomus was perhaps the most beloved blues writer of his era. Famous for Ray Charles's "Lonely Avenue" and Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas!" Pomus's catalog of hits is among the deepest in modern music. Yet no one interprets the Pomus oeuvre with more polish and sensitivity than Johnny Adams. "The Tan Canary" is considered, along with Aaron Neville, the most versatile vocalist to come out of New Orleans. This set is stunning.

How have I not heard of him before?

Tonight I was watching the Steve Martin/Eddie Murphy film "Bowfinger," and it opened with a terrific version of "There is Always One More Time." The singer's voice was strong and rich and confident, but I couldn't put a name to it. It was only by looking at the movie's soundtrack that I discovered that the singer was someone whose name was completely unfamiliar to me: Johnny Adams. I am amazed, to say the least. But this man's stuff is worth checking out.

For the love of Johnny!

This without a doubt is one of the finest recordings by Johnny Adams. Keep in mind I said one. If you love his sound start buying them one at a time. Start here and you won't be disapponted. Give it a listen and I know you'll feel the same way I do when I hear his sound. It's magic. Let the magic happen. Rememeber, Once You Hear Great Music from New Orleans, You'll Never Forget It!

Simply The Best

When the tan canary sings, the world is a sweeter place. Johnny Adams is perhaps the most soulful soloist to step up to a microphone--ever. I feel privileged to have seen him live in New Orleans and Boston. Now that he's gone, we have masterpieces like this to lift us up to a higher place. Buy this first, then add everything else. Johnny could make even the most insidious song into an instant favorite. Style. Grace. Talent. Johnny had it all.

Renowned around his Crescent City home base as "the Tan Canary" for his extraordinary set of soulfully soaring pipes, veteran R&B vocalist Johnny Adams tackled an exceptionally wide variety of material for Rounder in his later years; elegantly rendered tribute albums to legendary songwriters Doc Pomus and Percy Mayfield preceded forays into mellow, jazzier pastures. But then, Adams was never particularly into the parade-beat...
