Album Review

With heartland rock slowly being elbowed out of the mainstream during the course of the new millennium, such straight-ahead roots-rockers like Jonathan Singleton & the Grove are pushed toward the country. Twenty five years earlier, their simple, sturdy debut EP would have been vying for air time between John Cougar Mellencamp and Tom Petty, but in 2010, the group finds themselves on Toby Keith’s imprint Show Dog, accentuating Singleton’s Tennessee accent ever so slightly as the band mutes its rhythms and basks in the clean sheen of their Nashville production. Fortunately, these are the only commercial concessions Singleton & the Grove show on this appealing five-song EP; it’s certainly bright enough to fit on country radio, but underneath that veneer, this is good, solid American roots music, as appealing in its sweetly lazy ballads as it is in its pumping anthems.

Killer Group!

I saw these guys at Daryl Worley's TN River Run and just recently in Jackson, TN for Cinco De Mayo. I confess I had never paid any attention to them until the last concert where they absolutely blew me away! Probably Just Time is one of the best songs I've heard arranged lyrically and melodically. For someone who has penned several "killer" songs, Like "Don't" - Billy Currington, "Why Don't We Just Dance" - Josh Turner, "Watching Airplanes" - Gary Allan, and "Red Light" - David Nail. Jonathan and his band have a big future in country music!!!

Give this band a try!

Jonathan Singleton is an amazing talent! Spend $.99 and you're guaranteed to become an instant fan. More impressive is actually seeing this band in person. There's no doubt this band is on the cusp of GREAT things. CHECK 'EM OUT!

very nice

A healthy blend of country and rock & roll with a suiting rusty voice, enjoyed every song and i'd like to hear more.

Formed: Jackson, Tennessee

Genre: Country

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Jackson, TN native Jonathan Singleton co-penned number one hits for Gary Allan (“Watching Airplanes”) and Billy Currington (“Don’t”) before striking out on his own in 2009. The raspy singer/songwriter/guitarist’s band, the Grove, specializes in the kind of rootsy, outsider, contemporary country music favored by contemporaries like Steve Earle and Cross Canadian Ragweed.
