Brilliant debut

Josh Ritter is one of the best songwriters of our time, and one of the best things to ever come out of Idaho. This album is mostly him and his acoustic guitar and it's a powerful, stripped down sampling of the work he and his band did later. "Potter's Wheel" is one of the simplest tracks musically and is one of his best songs to date-- timeless and haunting. The fun and catchy "Hotel Song" and "Angels on Her Shoulders" are old-time country tunes in the truest sense, but without too much twang. "Leaves and Kings" might be the most similar to the work he's doing now-- a clever, catchy, country-esque story that could happen in any time or place. I believe this album was re-released in 2008, but it was his first full-length, probably released independently in about 2000, when he was playing solo at little places like Blackbird Java in Lewiston, Idaho. Then he was playing Ireland with a band. Then he was on Starbucks compilations. Then he was selling out bigger US venues. Then he was on Letterman. Now people are comparing him to Dylan and Springsteen, and they are dead-on.

While attending college in Oberlin, Ohio, Ritter got his first listen to Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch. He instantly fell in love with their songs and dropped his neuroscience major in...
