Customer Reviews

A brilliant example of musical craftsmanship!

I recently purchased the actual CD of "Journey Around The Sun" (not the download). When I opened the CD, I was immediately impressed with the packaging. I wasn't expecting the very cool, tri-fold CD sleeve....really expensive looking. And the graphics...superb! It gives the CD a "look" that totally conveys the essence of the CD's concept. (The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album comes to mind). And this one is right up there with that one, in my opinion. I knew the minute I looked at it that the entire project had been very well conceived. It seems as though nothing was left undone, from the CD design to the concept for the entire album and, of course, the beautiful music. I feel that people who merely download the music are missing out on a lot by not getting to see the terrific artwork and design on the actual CD. First class! And what a terrific bonus to have the two performance videos on there as well. Talk about good production values....Wow!

And then there's the music. Oh my! What can I say? The word "craftsmanship" keeps coming to mind. All of the intricate nuances of the music are so well crafted, it just sounds breathtaking. I have to give credit to Frank Ralls for orchestrating a sound that seems like it was made with a great deal of crative engineering. All the layerying of the instruments is so nicely done. And, considering that it's an album of instrumental music, I'll have to say that Frank and Bill Wren did an excellent job of keeping the music flowing from one song to the next. Very clever! It's difficult to keep instrumentals from sounding alike, but all of the songs on the album have their own interesting traits and I never got bored with any of them. "Road to Chichen Itsa" is probably my favorite, just because the rhythms are so strong. But, I liked all of the songs. Some seemed to relax me as I drifted away listening to the soaring violins. Others made me sit up and take notice as I became more and more impressed with all of the great performances. "Mayan Prophecy" is very good, and so is "Vessel of the Seven Lords." However, as soon as I heard the very first song on the album, I knew I was in for a well-produced, beautifully-recorded, and cleverly-written body of work.
