An Uplifting Listening Experience

Mending Sparks is an uplifting listening experience. Thoroughly introspective and warm it is full of inspiration. I love the selections and variety of songs. It's definitely becoming one of my favorite piano albums ever!  So glad Haim Cotton created such a gift for all. This album will be on my listening menu for a long time.

The Perfect Gift of Beautiful Music for the Holiday Season, or any Season!

I am enjoying this album so much! Really great music selections and I absolutely adore Cotton's version of Carol of the Bells! Never heard it played like that.  The album to me is magical and mysterious yet heartfelt and gentle without ever being over the top. It is the perfect holiday season gift, or any season for that matter. I highly recommend it!

Integrity and Ingenuity

The integrity and ingenuity of the music that hits the listener's ears upon pressing play shatters the ostensible triteness of the rainbow-tinted keyboard on the cover. The album is catalogued under the genre “Jazz,” but do not be deceived: Mending Sparks is ultimately a testimonial of Haim Cotton's versatility as a pianist, arranger, composer and producer. Many of the pieces initially sound alike, but upon close listening, one discovers two genres that dominate the work: classical as well as jazz. Cotton puts his own spin on a number of jazz, classical and traditional holiday songs. The classical “Violet Sweet for Talia,” which is based on Paganini, unexpectedly turns jazz in the middle;   “La Colomba,” originally a piece by classical composer Ottorino Respighi, reincarnates in this album as an arrangement for solo piano; “Carol of the Bells” and “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” are improvised up to the point where they are nearly constructed into entities of their own. However, “Intro” and the improvisation “Mending Sparks” are quite possibly the highlights of the album. They are highly original and sustain a pensive intimacy. “Reflective” may be the most apt way to describe the overall tone of the album.
