Album Review

Originally released only in Canada, this compilation was also an attractive buy for those who had all Cockburn's releases, as four previously unavailable songs were also included. The previously released older tracks mostly hail from the early- to mid-'70s era of his career and are a good representation of his talents. Two of the previously unreleased songs were also recorded then (in 1976) and deal, respectively, with the Native American in today's society ("Red Brother Red Sister") and Cockburn's conversion to Christianity ("Dweller by a Dark Stream"). The other two new songs are the searing "Loner" (a different version than the one released on Inner City Front) and "The Coldest Night of the Year," a relatively bouncy song about loneliness.

Good Compilation Album...

This contains songs that have not been available in the American iTunes store. "Laughter" and "Red Brother, Red Sister" are available here (though "Red Brother, Red Sister" was previously available on the live 'Circles In The Stream' album); as well as the Vietnam era anti-war song "It's Going Down Slow", which calls out for judgement against war-mongers and man's pride. This is a nice collection of his earlier work, worthy of your consideration.

Worth It

This compilation is worth every penny especially for the version of 'Loner' that appears on this album. Four great unreleased tracks as well as a nice array of old favorites. Totally pick this one up.

Immensely popular in his native Canada, singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn has found only cult success south of the border, in spite of a rich, varied body of work and considerable critical nods. He has won numerous Juno Awards and has kept the quality control on most of his albums at a high level. Cockburn's first decade of work (1970-1979) is largely literate, singer/songwriter folk-rock, often with a strong Christian tone and mystical, devotional lyrics. In 1979, Cockburn had his only major U.S....
