13 Songs, 36 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

On her third album, Joyride, actress-turned-singer Tinashe shows off her range, singing high and low while playing sexy, snarky, flirty, and righteous—sometimes in the course of the same song. She veers into downtempo pop for “Stuck with Me” (featuring Little Dragon) and then floats alongside Ty Dolla $ign and French Montana on the dembow-descendant “Me So Bad.” The braggadocious “No Drama” pulls its horror-movie piano line from Atlanta trap, while the sultry “He Don’t Want It” is perfect for long drives. Joyride offers many moods, but at just 10 proper songs, it’s true to its name in that it’s over far sooner than you’d like.

Almost a 3

I’m super disappointed with this album from the cover to the songs... Joyride sounds like an extended intro “keep your eyes on the road” sounded like an roller coaster ride Me so Bad didn’t fit the album aesthetic at all, “Ain’t good for ya” shoulda been a song. 30 minute album for 3 year delay come on... SIS needs to switch label go look at the trailer for Joyride that was serving vibes and aesthetics where did that go? I feel as if the album had no direction. Nightride was amazing and that’s because she had more creative control, the vibes of that were perfect and somewhat continued to Joyride but at a lesser scale. Sis got that Sophomore Album Curse... (I hate the album cover with a passion) I don’t like the font or what she’s wearing it doesn’t give me “joyride” vibes. I really want to give a three but I love my give so I gotta give you a four. I want to she her get a Grammy but that album ain’t Grammy potential.

Not her best but mostly great

Unlike y'all here, I actually waited for this album to drop and then listened to it (multiple times heheh) before writing a review. So this album pretty much goes from good old R&B to mainstream rap. The best tracks, in my opinion, are He Don't Want It (has the Reverie/Aquarius vibes), Ooh La La (sounds like something straight out of Black Water), Stuck With Me, Faded Love and No Contest which at some points reminds me of Waves by River Tiber (highly recommend that one). I love Salt too because it sounds kind of different in a good way. This album, unfortunately, also has its down tracks (I'm sorry but I can't with Me So Bad, it doesn't sound like a Tinashe song at all) but I guess it's alright since Aquarius also had a down track (should I say it? Oh, screw it, it's All Hands On Deck). And, of course, the interludes here are great as always. Now I don't really know where to rank Joyride among her other albums/mixtapes because I can't even choose a favorite. Is it Black Water? Is it Aquarius? Is it Amethyst? Is it Nightride? I don't know! They're all so amazing. I can't wait for the next project. Okay, I can. But I'm really excited for your next work and I'm willing to wait 5 years if I must. Love from Iceland!

This doesn't have anything to do with the album itself but I thought I should add, Tinashe is an amazing person and her aesthetics are wonderful. And she's so great at making her own music and videos, especially for how young she was when she started. Her music can sound like a dream come true and even give you the feeling that there is still a lot of beauty in this world, just like Björk, although their styles are very different. Also she liked one of my pics on Instagram so I'm never deleting it heheheh.
