EDITORS’ NOTES

The enigmatic producer channels candied melodies and incandescent synths on his full-length debut. In “Know Me,” he uncorks a psychedelic sugar rush from a heavyweight trap beat, while “Summer” is a cornucopia of flashing keyboards and fizzing climaxes. Even on the darker “Bounce,” an irrepressible enthusiasm is the driving force in Marshmello’s style. “Want U 2” fuses J-Pop’s giddiness and future bass’s fervor in a magnificent overload of hyperactive cuteness. By the time Omar Linx shows up to deliver the rap that grounds “Keep It Mellow,” you’re so soaked in techno-pop stimulation that a human voice seems downright exotic.

An Honest Opinion

Here's the thing: Marshmallow has a good sound. In fact, he has a great sound. Light and sometimes almost bouncy trap beats laced with what seems to me like synths and melodies reminiscent of Japenese J-Pop, his music is very enjoyable to listen to. However, similar to tropical artist Kygo, Marshmallow's music suffers because of one key issue: there is not enough variety in these tracks. It feels as if I'm hearing the same synths in every song but orchestrated into a different melody. And because this IS a trap album, it ends up feeling like I'm hearing the same formulaic layout in terms of the percussion and drums in every song. And don't get me wrong, I do like trap. But once again, more variety is needed. I would like to finish off by reiterating that I do think Marshmallow has a good sound. But the fact that that his tracks in this album do not have much differentiation from one to the next took away it's possible fifth star.
