i need music that sits in the background to kill the silence while i work, but that can't distract me. soundtracks usually do the trick. this one = a winner. 5 stars. 6 if i could.

I'm still waiting for him to do another really lush pastoral score like his mid-90s and early 2000s work. I'm beginning to think that might not happen. This score is very nice, although it strikes me as quite similar to his last few (Adjustment Bureau especially). He has a lot of cool percussive things going on as usual, not only with percussion instruments but with the way he uses guitar and piano. It makes for a unique sound and vibe. It just depends on what you're looking for. If like me, you're looking for that rich lush piano and strings sound, you won't find a lot of it here (the last few cues are nice though). I would instead check out his older scores like Meet Joe Black, Shawshank Redemption, Angels in America, and Revolutionary Road. Also, there are a few composers like Rachel Portman (who is well established) as well as lesser known names like Josh Kramer (highly recommend his Rebirth album) who I would look into. Panu Aaltio's "Home of Dark Butterflies" is another good one. Oh, and lastly, I like the classic oboe sound that he used to employ better than this new one that he has here. You simply cannot beat the sound from Angels in America and Six Feet Under. Those were the golden days.

Just came back from seeing The Judge and I ran to see if the movie score was on soundtrack. Such beautiful sounds and matched the movie perfectly. Excellent job Mr. Newman.
