Editors’ Notes

The Beau Brummels had only a few hits—"Laugh Laugh," "Just a Little," "You Tell Me Why"—yet their career is worthy of this 113-track retrospective. They were among the first American bands to respond to the British Invasion, and their harmonies and crisp optimistic sound make even their most sorrowful tunes sound like joyous revelations. Forty-two tracks (including alternate takes) represent their debut, and the September 1964 demo of Ron Elliott's "People Are Cruel" shows The Beau Brummels were already in full command of their talents before signing a deal with Autumn Records. "Don't Talk to Strangers" emulates The Byrds to great effect. Their covers of Bob Dylan—"One Too Many Mornings," "Mr. Tambourine Man," and a previously unreleased "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight"—offer interesting interpretations of the bard's well-known tunes. A version of The Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" has a haunting quality. Demos of Sal Valentino tunes are fantastic, and the late-'60s country-rock material proves The Beau Brummels never gave up their artistic dreams.
