OMG, Nina Hagen is back!

The inimitable Nina Hagen is back with 13 overtly punk-spiritual songs. Only Nina Hagen can create a musical extravaganza out of spiritual songs/gospels like these and make them rock. The songs are lively, tuneful, inspired and inspiring; and her legions of fans will not be disappointed. This is some of the best work Nina Hagen has done over the last 13 years. The songs are like the "soul" of Nina Hagen as she goes from one genre to another, all the time making the songs all her own (whatever Nina sings sounds like punk!).

Personal indeed

A personal journey from atheist to born again Christian, Nina takes on yet another genre and wraps it in her own package, stamps it and unapologetically mails it and nails it down with her signature. This album is probably one of my favorite Nina records to date. Nunsexmonkrock challenged me and befuddled me and I was instantly in love with it and a wee bit scared by it. Was she serious? Was I supposed to understand whether or not her references to God and Jesus were the product of serious religious experience or experimentation or tongue in cheek ramblings? I've genuinely enjoyed the journey Nina has been on and quite honestly, taken me with her. After listening to Personal Jesus I have an idea she might have been rehearsing her pre-faith with her earlier work. Although Om Namah Shivay, now I understand unavailable at her request, showed an artist looking for her voice (and, wow, what a voice!) and is a study in her search for something larger. Personal Jesus lays bare a woman, an artist, who isn't afraid of her intimate relationship with God. And I'm the better for it. Listen to it, enjoy it without waiting for a sermon. But if a serman is what you're after what better person to stand behind the pulpit.

How can you not love Nina?

This album is another demonstration of the variety of Nina Hagens range and abilities. She has put her personal touch on some traditional southern gospel songs as well as rewritten Personal Jesus to be a song of faith. This album is more reserved than her previous work (consider the concept) but it is still pure Nina, done only as she could do it. Nina has proven herself to be a true artist.
She does what she loves, and she sings as she wishes. If you enjoy her work, thats fantastic. If you hate her work, it doesn't changer her. The mother of punk has shown again that the top 40 is not her goal and that makes her greater than any of the producer created singers (not artists) out there getting rich by only doing what others want them to do. Personal Jesus is an album of faith that only Nina could do. It may offput some of her fans, but that may only reveal their narrowmindedness.
Please Nina, keep creating more.

Born in East Germany, Nina Hagen had already gained a reputation as a flamboyant rock singer by the time she emigrated to the West in 1976, where she formed a band, signed to CBS Germany, and released the debut album Nina Hagen Band in 1978. It was followed in 1980 by Unbehagen. Hagen's first U.S. release, Nina Hagen Band EP (1980), was a four-song EP consisting of songs drawn from her two German releases. She moved to New York and made her first English-language LP, Nunsexmonkrock, in 1982. That...
