Album Review

Just for Kicks is the debut album as bandleader for Thompson, "the poor man's Esquivel." The chorus was added at Rady's or someone else at RCA's suggestion. Like Esquivel, Thompson creates light but sophisticated music in the spurious "bachelor-pad" idiom (for would-be playboys with fancy hi-fi sets). Unlike Esquivel, Thompson's primary role was producing other artists. It is to his credit that the album is strong as it is, although in 1959 it was probably taken for granted by music professionals and ignored by most of the buying public. "Diga Diga Doo" is absolutely inspired, and the rest of the tracks are solid examples of heavyweight fluff. The title track and "Peek-a-Boo" are originals. For fans of catchy instrumentals with wordless choruses (the Esquivel and Bob Thompson sound), Kicks is essential.
