iTunes Review

Ain't Gonna Stop kick-starts James Otto's sophomore long player like a brand new Harley Davidson with an old school chopper design — the song is rooted in Skynyrd-inspired Southern rock from the '70s, but updated with modern guitar effects and shining studio production courtesy of Big & Rich. Though it's easily the strongest rocking song on Sunset Man, it hardly sets the tone for an album that is mostly made up of moving country ballads, playful love songs and the kind of slow-burning, sultry numbers that inspire dirty dancing and one-night stands. Speaking of which, the sound of a beer can opening introduces "Drink & Dial," a funny ditty that warns rednecks about making inebriated booty-calls. Diametrically, the weepy "For You" is a heartbreaking serenade with lovelorn lyrics that could have been written in response to a Dear John letter. "Just Got Started Lovin' You" flirts with an '80s urban cowboy style as Otto's ascending baritone on the rootsy verses sounds uncannily influenced by Mel McDaniel's "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On." "Your Good Thing's Gone Bad," one of the bonus tracks, is a soulful standout with its brilliant juxtapositioning of pedal steel and classic R&B melodies.

Great Music!

Wow, where has this man been hiding? Apparently he's part of the "MuzikMafia", but I'd never heard of him before iTunes. Although I liked everything on this album, my top three picks would be "Just Got Started Lovin' You", "Ain't Gonna Stop" and "When a Woman's Not Watching". All excellent songs. I would suggest checking out his first album as well - some great stuff on there! For whatever reason, James Otto sounds fresh and original to me, while at the same time he reminds me of "old Nashville" before everyone got slicked up and over produced. Love it.

Great Singer, Great Person

I met James about a month ago when he played a free concert here in Boston for St. Judes Children's Hospital. Hes a down to earth person, and he's got a set of pipes that blow you away. If you like this cd, check out the songs "Days Of Our Lives" and "Long Way Down" from his first CD. Overall, his new cd, "Sunset Man" has a great combination of slower-paced and high-octane tunes that will be sure to please even the fussiest listener.

Amazing Album

There are certian albums that you know will have quite a few number one hits and this is definently one of those albums. Last year Taylor Swift and Rodney Akins made albums that had a ton of hit songs and this album will be very similar. Almost every song is great. He has a very emotional voice that really shines on Ballads by making them very connectable. Ain't Gonna Stop 8/10 An anthem type of song. Really good way to start things off. Just Got Started Lovin You 10/10 I became interested in this guy's music when I heard this song. For You 10/10 This has to be a hit. It really showcases his great voice and the emotion he puts into songs. These Are The Good Ole Days 7/10 It's ok nothing special Where Angels Hang Around 9/10 This is a very powerful song. I wonder if he's refering to St. Judes or something similar. Sunset Man 7/10 Another just ok track. It's very differnt from the other songs but isn't awful. You Don't Act Like My Woman 10/10 This is a great song. When a Woman's Not Watching 10/10 This song might not be a hit but it has a great message and is very well done. Drink & Dial 10/10 Hillarious song. This will be a hit. So damn funny. Damn Right 10/10 This is another song that really shows off his vocal talent. Slow but agian very powerful and emotional. The Man That I Am 10/10 This is a song that the more you hear it the more you like it. It has a rock vibe to it and is a really catchy song.

A country singer and songwriter with a Southern rock heart, James Otto was born into a military family at the Fort Lewis Army Base in Washington and grew up all over the U.S., including extended stays in North Dakota and Alabama. He started singing when he was only four years old, and learned both violin and saxophone before getting his first guitar at the age of 13. Both his father and grandfather were part-time musicians who played gigs in local bars, so music was hardly a foreign thing to Otto,...
