iTunes Review

Martin Sexton is one of the modern legends on the independent folk music circuit. His fans are loyal and attuned to his every quip. Sugarcoating is another solid effort from a thinking man’s songwriter. “Found” begins things with Sexton’s usual wit and balanced thought. “I’m a man who seeks high places, searching for the common ground,” indeed. “Always Got Away” is a piano ballad where Sexton uses every facet of his voice, from the road-wise, gritty growl to the sweet yearning falsetto to make his point. “Livin’ The Life” adds funky keyboards that sound as if Sexton’s been listening to Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees and taking notes as the funky keyboards create a 1970s FM radio atmosphere. The title track reflects on 9/11 and the media’s role in our lives with a country backbeat setting up the line dance. “Stick Around” name drops the Beatles’ Abbey Road and recalls both the Fab Four’s pop bounce and their string orchestrations. The Deluxe Edition of the album features several live cuts that exhibit his captivating live performances.

A Stone Cold Gut Level Groove

Martin's music is that kind of disc that seems to transcend everything and place you squarely in a place he wanted you to be. Dreamlike, whimsical, real, emotional stories weaved in a tapestry of instrumentation that makes you feel like a welcomed friend on a front porch in rural US with a handful of amazingly talented musicians. There's no noise here, but several gems that instantly make top playlist rotation and are passed on to friends as a favor, not a referral.

Thank You Martin!

It has been years since I have counted the calendar days for an album release. It has been nice to do that again. It has been fun to relish every new listen to each new song as if it were my last! Thank you Martin for bringing the butterflies back to music!

Just OK

I have been a longtime Sexton fan and this is not my favorite Album.

Martin Sexton was one of the most talked-about arrivals on the "new folk" acoustic music scene. The guitarist, singer, and songwriter has an amazing vocal range and makes effective use of it on his recordings and in his live shows. Unlike so many other contemporary singer/songwriters, his vocal style can be described as truly soulful, combining the best qualities of singers like Van Morrison, Al Green, Aaron Neville, and Otis Redding. Sexton, a self-taught guitarist and singer, was raised in a family...
