Album Review

If you're longing for the new wave/pre-MTV days when bands such as Blondie and the Tom Tom Club ruled, Detroit's Thunderbirds Are Now may very well rekindle Reagan-era déjà vu. Specializing in the same guitar-meets-synth sound as the aforementioned bands, Thunderbirds are obviously admirers of snappy little pop tunes, as evidenced throughout their second full-length offering (and first for the Frenchkiss label), 2005's Justamustache. It's hard not to listen to a tune like "Enough About Me, Let's Talk About Me" and not automatically picture a hopping dancefloor circa 1982, littered with dancers wearing headbands and/or legwarmers, while a tune like "From: Skulls" would have undoubtedly fit perfectly on the soundtrack to either Valley Girl or The Last American Virgin. With a sound comparable to both new wave originators and modern day revivalists, Justamustache seems tailor-made for both fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Gwen Stefani.

Justamustache Are Fantastic!

Excellent layering on Justamustache! I would definately recommend this album for anyone who is bored with the emo/punk/indie rock scene right now. I had the priveledge of seeing them at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor Michigan about a year ago. They've really come a long way since then (Not that their live show wasn't fantastic). Even though it was one of my favorite tracks off Necks, Bodies Adjust sounds so much richer after being reworked. Proudly setting themselves apart somewhere inbetween synth, pop, post-hardcore, prog, indie, and new wave, Thunderbirds Are Now! don't disappoint. If you have the opportunity to see them at SXSW, DO!!

Great Album...Better Live Show

Saw these guys the other night and they were one of the more amazing live bands I've ever seen. Came home and downloaded their entire catalogue. This is a really damn album, but seriously, go see them live. They'll blow you away.

Formed: 2002 in Detroit, MI

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Detroit freak-out artists Thunderbirds Are Now! feature Ryan Allen (vocals, guitar), Scott Allen (keys, vocals, sampler), and Mike Durgan (drums); the bass position seems in flux, but included at various points Marty Smith and Howard Chang. TAN! perfected their nervy, beat- and yelp-addled sound with 2002's Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief LP (Action Driver) and the 2003 EP Another One Hypnotized By..., released through the Flint indie Acutest. Buzz began and stuck with Thunderbirds; soon French Kiss...
