5 Songs, 24 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

This is the sound of a band full of easy confidence. We’re treated to a blast of vintage Coldplay on “All I Can Think About Is You”—a simmering slow burner of Parachutes-era intensity—while the sunset pop of “Miracles (Someone Special)” sees Big Sean add his name to the band's roster of unlikely-but-satisfying collaborators.

A Little Bit of Everything...

What a collection. Track 1 sounds like early 2000s Coldplay. Their collaboration with The Chainsmokers is undeniably popish (for better or for worse). And 'Hypnotized' sounds like everything they've ever done musically put in a blender. Coldplay is embracing many different sounds, and I admire their courage in doing so.

Best in years

Gonna call it. This wonderful small collection of 5 songs is going to be their best in years. They've brought the rock back, but now as Hypnotic Dream Rock. The genre they were always meant to do.

Is Coldplay back in the music business?

Not going to get too excited yet because it's a small sample, but it looks like Coldplay still remembers how to play actual instruments! Could use a break from their recent affinity for churning out top-40 dance songs.
