About Gavle Symphony Orchestra

Formed in 1912, the Gävle Symphony Orchestra is a Swedish ensemble based in Gävle, and it is noted for its efforts to revive neglected Swedish music. Among the composers whose works have been championed are Joachim Nicolas Eggert, Franz Berwald, Gustaf Bengtsson, Oscar Byström, Jacob Adolf Hägg, Oskar Lindberg, Otto Olsson, Kurt Atterberg, and Sven-David Sandström, and the orchestra's repertoire extends from early Romantic to contemporary music. At first, the Gävle Symphony Orchestra gave concerts at the Gävle Theatre and the Mariners' Church, but in 1998 it opened its own hall, the Gävle Konserthus, which is situated on the Gävle River. The orchestra was first conducted by Ruben Liljefors, and prominent conductors have included Eric Bengtson, Gunnar Staern, Rainer Miedel, Doron Salomon, Hannu Koivula, Carlos Spierer, Petri Sakari, and Robin Ticciati. Appointed as artistic director in 2012, Jaime Martin began his tenure as principal conductor in 2013. The orchestra has recorded for BIS, Sterling, Naxos, Caprice Records, Alba, Ondine, and other labels. ~ Blair Sanderson
