About Keelan Donovan

Making music that's cool on the surface but passionate at heart, singer and songwriter Keelan Donovan has made his reputation through both talent and hard work, finding success as a songwriter and backing it up with a demanding touring schedule. Donovan was born in Portland, Maine and grew up a passionate sports fan, playing and watching hockey. When he was in middle school, Donovan saw a play about the life of Buddy Holly, and it sparked an interest in performing. The eighth grader soon picked up a guitar and learned to play. Music was a hobby for Donovan, but it wasn't until he enrolled at the University of Maine that he developed the nerve to start playing and singing in public. It didn't take long for him to fall in love with performing for an audience, and he found steady work playing covers at frat houses and off-campus bars. Donovan's excitement about playing other folks' songs led him to try writing tunes of his own. As he began thinking seriously about making music as a career, he left Maine for Nashville, Tennessee in 2011 and was accepted at Belmont University.

Donovan continued to concentrate on his music during downtime from studying, and after receiving his diploma, he hit the road in the first of many low-budget tours as he played wherever he could find an audience. By 2013, Donovan was opening for the likes of Toby Keith, Donavon Frankenreiter, Kip Moore, and Brantley Gilbert, as well as headlining at bars and nightclubs. In April 2014, Donovan released his debut EP, The Happenstance EPs, Pt. 1 of 3, with Pt. 2 of 3 following in August 2014 and Pt. 3 of 3 concluding the trilogy in June 2015. The EPs were then compiled into an album titled Happenstance. By this time, Donovan's audience was growing and he was playing as many as 200 dates a year, as well as regularly writing songs. In 2016, Donovan was signed to a publishing and recording deal with Big Yellow Dog Music in Nashville; 2017 saw the release of a six-song EP for the label, simply titled Keelan Donovan. ~ Mark Deming
