iTunes Review

Leftover Salmon returns to recording after an eight-year absence with Aquatic Hitchhiker, a song collection that revives the group’s “polyethnic cajun slamgrass” sound while adding a few new twists. New recruit Andy Thorn finds common ground with the eclectic instincts of band co-founders Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt as they offer up a set brimming with regional Americana flavors and deft instrumental embellishments. Leftover Salmon made its rep two decades ago by straddling the bluegrass and jam-band realms; its latest incarnation still crosses genre boundaries without restraint. Brisk ‘grassy rambles like “Keep Driving” and “Kentucky Skies” are featured alongside Cajun waltzes like “Bayou Town” and calypso-accented numbers like “Liza.” The prevailing mood is friendly and relaxed, whether the guys are catching a buzz under country skies (“Sing up the Moon”), taking a romantic getaway down South (“Gulf of Mexico”), or just going where their feet lead them (“Walking Shoes”). Aquatic Hitchhiker’s instrumental title tune offers the sort of subtle textures and rousing dynamics that have become the quintet’s trademarks.

Best Review Title Ever

The previous review called this record "The Best Lakefront Picnic Soundtrack"......which is a PERFECT and APT description of a record I have ever heard.

Thanks to Deadliest Catch

Leftover Salmon is a tight little band of players, and I have heard all kinds of banjo players Even the great Roy Clark, but man on the banjo is the most talented player I believe I have ever heard, thank you to the band. Nice Album, it's already in my car.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The self-described "polyethnic cajun slamgrass" group Leftover Salmon formed in Colorado in the early '90s as a merger of two area acts, the Left Hand String Band and the Salmonheads. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist/washboard player Vince Herman, banjoist Mark Vann, mandolinist/guitarist Drew Emmit, bassist Tye North and drummer Michael Wooten, the band's good-timey earned a grassroots following on the festival circuit and resulted in their 1993 self-released debut Bridges to Bert.
