Album Review

Ivy follow up 2001's Long Distance with their sophisticated fourth album, In the Clear. The ten-song set shines with smooth synth beats, breezy acoustic guitars, and elegant string arrangements. It's refined and focused, but also sexy and intimate. The band's airy softness turns dark, and it's an inviting listen. Dominique Durand's honeyed, warm vocals are as seductive as ever, especially on skin-tight tracks such as "Four in the Morning" and "Keep Moving." "Tess Don't Tell" is classic Ivy. Andy Chase's post-punk-influenced background fits Adam Schlesinger's pop roots so nicely on this track, and it's playful in mood without going overboard. Ivy didn't overdo things in the studio. It's an album that breathes easy while also one that struts in slow motion. The dreamy, piano-laden opener, "Nothing but the Sky," is testament to that. Slow-building pastel-colored melodies mixed between cool, chilled rock moments capture the essence of In the Clear. It's most definitely an impressive culmination of Ivy's career to date.

Amazing album

Amazing album. Ivy is one band that consistently delivers on the great music. I am really into this album, I think that it is every bit as good as "Apartment Life", if not even a notch or two better. Standout tracks include "Four In The Morning" and "I've Got You Memorized". If you looking for some mellow, poppy rock with strong female vocals, you cannot go wrong with this.

how could you not like it?

i see colors when i listen to music, i see light blue and sea-foam green when I listen to this album. These colors are pleasing, warm, soothing, yet full of life which are the feelings you will experience when you hear this music

Ivy Rocks

I have been a big Ivy fan ever since their music (and the band themselves) was on 'Roswell' several years ago. Dominique Durand's voice is so unique and beautiful, I challenge you not to enjoy pretty much everything she sings! My favorites on this album are 'Thinking About You' and 'Tess Don't Tell', but I highly reccomend the whole thing. Their earlier albums ApartmentLife and Long Distance are also fantastic, especially if you enjoy artists like Frou Frou. Definitely check Ivy out!

Biography

Formed: 1994 in New York City, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The New York-based pop group Ivy came together in 1994 when multi-instrumentalist Andy Chase placed an ad in the Village Voice in an attempt to start a band. Musician/songwriter Adam Schlesinger answered Chase, for the two had mutual musical tastes — both liked Prefab Sprout and the Go-Betweens. Within months, the two met Parisian-born Dominique Durand. Durand had come to New York in 1989 to learn English, not join a band. Ironically enough, Durand was a massive music fan and adored the sounds...
