Despite the four-year gap preceding Hall & Oates’ 13th studio album, 1988’s Ooh Yeah! picks up right where Big Bam Boom left off. Gated drums, chiming synths, and rubbery basslines propel the pair’s soulful harmonies on “Downtown Life,” while a slinking groove underpins the heartbreaking falsettos of “Everything Your Heart Desires.” The breezy “Soul Love” even finds the duo seeking out new rhythms, applying a light, electro-tropical feel to their R&B pop.
