Editors’ Notes

Although 2004's When The Sun Goes Down veered slightly from the tropical twang of 2002's No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, Kenny Chesney made a full circle return to beach bumming in 2005 with Be As You Are. Originally meant to be a side project, Chesney's tenth studio album (obviously) draws inspiration from the country calypso sound forged in the 1970s by Jimmy Buffett — but where Buffett wastes away in Margaritaville, Chesney gets contemplative with songs that muse on more serious topics than a cheeseburger in paradise. "Old Blue Chair" introduces the album with the sounds of waves crashing behind Chesney playing an acoustic guitar as he wistfully waxes introspective about his life as a touring musician and what home really means to him. Of course not all the songs here are as pensive and meditative. The playful "Guitars And Tiki Bars" grooves with rootsy reggae rhythms, island instrumentation, and buoyant lyrics about living and loving the island life as a refuge from day-to-day American stress. "Key Lime Pie" is another fun little ditty with steel drums that would well accompany a fruity cocktail and getting some sand in between your toes.

Customer Reviews

Kenny's best album

This is by far his best work to date (2008) yet isn't among his top selling albums. Every song takes you down to the British Virgin Islands and makes you want to be there. If you like Jimmy Buffett's lyrics, Kenny runs a close 2nd on this album.

Could be the soundtrack to my life...

How could I not love this album? Just take a look at the song titles... It's not enough that I'm from Boston, or that I have a sister named Sherri; but my family and myself have a second home on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico... so naturally, I'm an island boy with a soft spot for key lime pie, guitars, AND tiki bars. :) So Kenny, if you're reading this, look us up at Casa De Claire next time you're in the carribbean; and hats off to making such a great album.

Be as You Are

I have been to the islands recently, I think Kenny's review of the islands through his music is awesome. Having a hectic fast paced life, I can completely understand why and how much he loves the islands and the trade winds and way slow paced life, that the states has no idea what we are missing....This is a great cd to loose life in... Way to Go!!!

Genre: Country

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Contemporary country star Kenny Chesney didn't have the immediate breakout success that many of his peers enjoyed upon signing with major labels, but gradually built up a significant following via hard work, pop-friendly ballads, and a likable "Average Joe" persona. Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1968 and raised in the nearby small town of Luttrell, best known as the home of Chet Atkins. He grew up listening to both country and rock & roll, but didn't get serious about music until...
