Buy it for the concertos... and the symphony too
This is an excellent Khachaturian sampler if you already know Gayaneh and Spartacus. Both concertos are terrific, with much Armenian color, and the typical "circus tent in the desert" feel that is soooo Khachaturian. The slow mvt. of the piano concerto is one of the rare pieces that feature an odd instrument, the flexatone (not all recordings use the flexatone. This one does). Masquerade is reminiscent of Shostakovitch's "Jazz Suite." And the symphony is a curate's egg: it starts with a truly great 1st mvt, but it doesn't sustain itself. The sound is good and pretty even - considering the difference in age of the recordings.
