Superb movie, unforgettable music
I teach a Cinema class at a high school, and since I began teaching KIKUJIRO has been one of the two films I show for our international unit. The film is magic--the teenage boys who watch VIVA LA BAM, the teenage girls who love sentimental romantic comedies, international cinema junkies, etc., this film appeals to all of them. I always have students in my class who like some of the soundtracks from the films we watch so much that they go out and buy them because of the class. Many buy FORREST GUMP, BULLITT, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU, but the number one popular soundtrack they cannot get enough of is KIKUJIRO (okay, O BRO is probably tied). This says tons about the quality of the music because these are kids who would normally not touch straight modern classical music with a ten-foot-pole, but because the music is so much a part of why this fantastic film resonates, they cannot help themselves. Try it, you will like it, if you enjoy poignant piano, violin, etc. that sings without lyrics. I love Black Eyed Peas, Miles Davis, The Police, etc., so this is not normally my cup of tea...I like it because it takes me to my happy place (yeah, I know that is goofy, but it just touches me...which is weird for a guy without many emotions).
A glimmer of hope
I have been recently surprised by finding more japanese albums in Itunes music store. I love Joe Hisaishi's works (especially with the Spirited Away soundtrack) and just hearing a small sample of Summer, I knew this was a special album. Hopefully iTunes will release more of Joe Hisaishi's works.
I've always loved Joe Hisaishi's music ever since I saw Spirited Away, and in looking for more of his music I came across this. And like his other works this is just the type of music I love to hear, so calm and peaceful, it gets me in such a great mood. Anyone who loves Joe's music this is a must to get, and anyone who loves music for what it is this is a must to get.
