iTunes Review

A remarkable vocal quartet who originated in Chicago in the late thirties, The Cats & The Fiddle were inspired by the tight group harmony sound pioneered by acts like the Mills Brothers, The Orioles and other East Coast acts, but were equally inspired by the minstrel and medicine show traditions of the deep south, a remarkable combination of influences that make The Cats & The Fiddle unique in the history of black popular music. Numbers like “Killing Jive” and “Left With The Thought of You” emphasize tight vocal work and subtle, jazz inflected chord progressions while the rustic “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water” shows the group was thoroughly steeped in the blues traditions. Their stellar ballad “I Miss You So” eventually became a black vocal group standard and has been covered by Lee Andrews & The Hearts, Fats Domino, Little Anthony & The Imperials and countless others. Though the group continued to record throughout the ‘40s, this collection, focused on the group’s earliest recording for the BLuebird label, features the majority of their finest material.

I became a fan of swing in 1968 and haven’t found an album that turns me on this much in years. Move over Ink Spots and Mills Brothers: you’ve got nothing on these men! More, please.

I like this album but "gangbusters" skips the whole way through, don't buy it.

The Cats & the Fiddle were one of dozens of harmony vocal groups to spring up in the wake of the success of the Mills Brothers. They endured longer than many of their pre-World War II rivals, both as a performing and recording unit and also as an influence on others who came after them, mostly by virtue of their style being so far out in front of the competition; yet they never charted a record in their dozen years of recording, and the biggest success that their founder ever saw on record was as...
