iTunes Editors’ Notes

It didn't take long for the pop world to catch up with young Roberta Flack. Her stunning reading of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" in 1969 opened the door to pop stardom, and soon Flack was singing cool soul music with the biggest names in R&B. This 1973 milestone marked Flack's ascent to the top of the charts, on her way to becoming one of the top-selling voices of the mid-'70s. Her unique style, characterized by hushed intensity and quietly sexy phrasing, provided the perfect contrast and a quenching alternative to the soul belters of the same period. Key tracks: "Jesse," "Suzanne," "Killing Me Softly with His Song.”

Sensational Music

Roberta Flack was an amazing artist and her song "Killing Me Softly" is the best yet in my opinion.

Jesse...

... is one of the all time under-rated songs. Roberta Flack's voice is an instrument in tune with the Angels! There isn't a song she has recorded that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed!!!

Killing me Softly

The song "Killing Me Softly" is one of the best "minimalist" songs I have ever heard. Ms. Flack's voice carries the whole song as well as the well written lyrics. The little twist and turns in the chord progressions serve only to enhance the listening experience. A truly well crafted song with poignant lyrics and an outstanding vocal by Ms. Flack. Everyone should have this song in their library.

Classy, urbane, reserved, smooth, and sophisticated — all of these terms have been used to describe the music of Roberta Flack, particularly her string of romantic, light jazz ballad hits in the 1970s, which continue to enjoy popularity on MOR-oriented adult contemporary stations. Flack was the daughter of a church organist and started playing piano early enough to get a music scholarship and eventually, a degree from Howard...
