Album Review

A classic case of hindsight being 20/20, Killswitch Engage's eponymous debut is now viewed as a significant touchstone in the emergence of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal, but it had only a limited impact upon the insular Northeastern hardcore scene when it was released through Ferret Records in 2000 (and that was mostly because its musicians had previously been involved with influential underground bands like Overcast and Aftershock). One listen is all that's required to understand why. Like many of their peers at the time, the musicians in Killswitch Engage were boldly testing the spartan limitations of hardcore songwriting — coming out of their inherited hardcore shell, if you will — by introducing heretical elements from heavy metal, elements which most genre purists would consider anathema. These included all manner of deathly Cookie Monster grunts and shrieks, fusillades of fast-picked notes, and intricate minor-key melodies, plus all manner of technical instrumental showboating (histrionic solos, double kick-drum blastbeats, unorthodox time signatures, etc.), which lifted album standouts like "Irreversal," "In the Unblind," and particularly "Temple from the Within" and "Vide Infra" beyond their more simplistic, hardcore-loyal counterparts. In fact, it wasn't at all surprising when these last two songs were re-recorded for the band's breakthrough second album, Alive or Just Breathing, by which time Killswitch Engage had symbolically swallowed the proverbial heavy metal bullet by signing with stalwart metal label Roadrunner. Compared to that sophomore effort, this eponymous first salvo can't help but sound formative, but it still contains plenty of exciting material for KE diehards, while embodying the curious conundrum of a transitory feel, despite there not being anything, technically speaking, for it to transition from! Told you it was a conundrum!

New album eh?

Where do i even begin...i just got finished listening to an album ive been anticipating since 2006 and im a lil more than disappointed. Kse really changed alot here. I know some fans wanted that, but one thing I really missed was the gorgeous and almost dreamy choruses from As Daylight Dies and the ballsy-ness from End Of Heartache. This album has its sung choruses and a few ballsy riffs here and there, but something just doesnt feel right. It could be because adam did not directly produce this album and some other dude did the main work. Also where the hell is Adams background singing? That is signature kse and makes the song complete! His voice is too good to not include him. Also howard sounds like a pubescent teenager crying on this album, im one of the biggest howard fans ever but his voice changed ALOT. I threw on my headphones and plugge in my iphone as soon as the clock hit 12 so i could hop on itunes and buy it asap. Now im
Bummed.

Sick as always.

Their sound may have matured but they are still the best in the genre. I feel sorry for any fans that refuse to grow along with them.

OMG THIS IS WHAT WEVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!

Ok, I Love Killswitch Engage, and I have been waiting forever for this album to be in my hands, and I thought it would be ok, nothing over the top, BUT I HAVE BEEN PROVEN WRONG! This is the rush, that music, that greatness we have been waiting for, with the solos, riffs, incredible drumming, bass lines, vocals, you name it! It was worth more than 12 dollars!!!! If you are just getting into KsE, or have been a fan for a long time, this is the album for you! Once you listen to it, you will be mezmerized! It's so colorful, so great, gives you that amazing zing from start to finish! And the Live Songs, I thought oh cool, a couple live tracks, but I listened, THEY ROCK! From the comedy and duel vocals From Adam D. in My Curse Live, to the INSANE solos in Holy Diver, Or the incredible Screams and Squeals in Rose of Sharyn, it's Worth it!!! So click that Buy Album Button, and get ready for the thrill of your life!!! Too bad I Can't Give more than 5 stars, i would give it at least 12!!!

The four bandmembers who came together and created Killswitch Engage already had strong fan followings. Mike D'Antonio (bass) was formerly the leader and principal songwriter of Overcast, the legendary underground metal group. When Overcast split in 1998, D'Antonio sought for a year to find the right combination of players to fuse hardcore and metal with melody. During the summer of 1999, D'Antonio connected with Adam Dutkiewicz, who was the drummer for Aftershock, and Joel...
